Pets

Our All About Me unit took us from sharing about ourselves, to learning about others; the qualities we share and what makes us different, to families and finally pets.  The first weeks of school were about building a class community and getting to know one another.

Embedded within the pet theme are activities that practice important math and literacy skills.  This week we focused on counting objects with 1:1 correspondence, drawing a person, comparing lengths, identifying or matching letters in our name, alphabetical order, correct crayon grasp, and vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines.

Our discussion of pets included a Veterinarian Office where students practiced many skills while taking on the roles of vet or pet owner.  The children were about to choose from a selection of pets, decide on the pet's ailment and then orally relay this information to the receptionist.  The student taking on the receptionist role was responsible for recording the pet's name, type of pet and the pet's issue.  Students practiced pre-writing skills and oral communication skills.

The pet vet role included using tools to examine pets, and creativity with describing a solution.  Students could prescribe medication, bandage animals, request x-rays and/or give shots.  The children exercised their imagination and practiced communication skills.

Finally, the students could serve as a groomer.  They were able to bathe the animals, brush them and accessorize with bows and ribbons.

In the playdoh center the children molded their own animals and used cookie cutters to make animals shapes.

In honor of our feathered pets, the children painted with feathers.  Students explored the different patterns feathers create in paint and mixed colors.

At the sensory table, the children washed dog toys with toothbrushes.

The children practiced more imaginative play with Littlest Pet Shop toys.

Each week a new game is introduced.  This week's game, Diggety Dog, practiced turn-taking skills, colors and counting.

Our newest center in the classroom is the Listening Center.  Each week students are introduced to new stories that they can follow along with and enjoy alongside friends.

Toy cars continue to be a favorite toy in the classroom.  The children demonstrate imagination while playing, but also communicate with one another while playing, practicing sharing skills, compromise and conversational turn taking.

Lacing beads practice fine motor skills, but also patterns, color recognition and color identification, and the children love to see how long they can make their creations!

We have had two library visits so far.  During library time, the children listen to a story, choose a book to take home and then have free play with some of the library materials.

We've had a lot of rain this Fall and with rain comes creatures that enjoy the dampness.  We found a frog in the sandbox!

Everyone in our classroom is choosing to be nice this year!
