First Day of School 2020

Thursday, September 17, 2020

The students had a great first day of school.  They were all eager to learn and play.  Upon arrival, students learned our morning routine and then we got our bodies moving with our hello song, Rise and Shine by Dr. Jean.  We will keep this same song for a month so the children will become familiar with the words and tune.  Each month a new hello song will be introduced.  Students then greeted one another by name with a wave.

Next, I read a short social story about our classroom rules for staying healthy.  We are using the visual of a cow to indicate how far apart children should be while playing.

After reviewing the rules, the children engaged in free play.  Toys available included playdoh, our light table, play kitchen, cars, dinosaurs, magnets, puzzles, letter beads and magnetic shapes.

Following free play, we had a second circle.  During this time, we will often go over the calendar and weather, as well as an academic skill.  Today we focused on the weather, a game to learn one another's names and a new song, Friends, Friends, 123.

We then went outside for snack and a mask break.

Once back in the building, we read a short story, Froggy Goes to School by Jonathan London and then separated into two groups.  At these groups students learned how to play with their personal sensory bins and put stickers on the first letter of their name.

We ended the day with outdoor games including Mr. Fox and Captain Says.

It was so wonderful to spend time with your children today.  I look forward to the many days ahead!
